Walk in the footsteps of America’s greatest politicians, writers, and artists on the East Village Pub Crawl with Uncle Sam’s New York. Located above Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the neighborhood has played a significant role in shaping our country’s history through several cultural movements that originated there, including the beatnik and hippie movements. With a mix of political, cultural, and artistic history at every turn, the East Village Pub Crawl is a perfect way to experience one of New York’s most famed neighborhoods. Old Town Bar - The Old Town Bar has been serving regional beers and pub fare to East Village locals since 1892. It was a protected speakeasy during the Prohibition and to this day still boasts its original fixtures, including the 55 foot mahogany and marble bar and the old fashioned tin ceilings. The Old Town Bar, like other East Village establishments, has stood as a creative sanctuary for writers and artists for decades and has also appeared in many novels and on film and television.Pete’s Tavern - Pete’s Tavern was established in 1864 and has made the claim that it is the oldest continuous bar in New York City. During the Prohibition it served as a meeting place for New York City politicians from nearby Tammany Hall, and still has a low key atmosphere that has made it a favorite among patrons. Some notable clients include writer O. Henry, Rudy Giuliani, Harrison Ford, John F. Kennedy Jr., and the cast and crew from HBO’s The Sopranos. Cooper Union - The Cooper Union was founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper, who believed that a high quality education should be provided free of charge to every pupil, and as a result Cooper Union is one of the country’s most prestigious and selective institutions. It is perhaps most known for being the location of Abraham Lincoln’s “Cooper Union Address” against slavery and gained him the Presidential nomination. Many Former Presidents and politicians throughout history have also given speeches there.McSorley’s Old Ale House - McSorley’s Old Ale House was established in 1854 as a “Men Only” pub and remained so until 1970. The interior walls are papered with picture frames and newspaper articles dating back to McSorley’s early days and the shelf above the bar is a jumble of historical paraphernalia, which has not been altered since 1910. Several prominent literary figures were regulars at the bar, including poet E.E. Cummings, and many other famous people have visited, including Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and John Lennon. For more information on Uncle Sam's New York tours, call 917-655-0906 or visit www.unclesamsnewyork.com.
