  • Downtown New York is one of the most historic and intriguing neighborhoods in the United States. It has long been the heart of the financial industry and home to Wall Street, and in recent years, it’s has also emerged as an around-the-clock community for working, living, and entertaining, an elegant residential neighborhood, a home to world-class cultural institutions, and a center for music, dance, and visual arts events.

Lower Manhattan is home to the New York Stock Exchange, but for historians there’s also Stone Street (Manhattan’s first paved street), Hanover Square (a triangular public park that was home to the New York Cotton Exchange and the New York Cocoa Exchange), and loads of stunning architecture.

If you have plans to take a tour of New York Harbor and visit the Statue of Liberty (for tickets, contact Statue Cruises), be sure to also take time to visit the fascinating Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The museum memorializes immigrants and their experiences by exhibiting photos, posters, advertisements and naturalization papers, showing how they became assimilated into American culture. The American Family Immigration History Center offers an opportunity to trace ancestors using actual ship records. Admission is free with purchase of a ferry ticket aboard Statue Cruises.

Battery Park contains a number of monuments honoring explorers, soldiers, inventors, and immigrants. The most well known is the steel and bronze sculpture, The Sphere, by Fritz Koenig. This 45,000-pound piece was situated in the fountain at the World Trade Center’s Tobin Plaza from 1971 to September 11th, 2001.

There are also many museums in the area. Federal Hall National Memorial (26 Wall St., 212-825-6888) is home to a number of artifacts from our nation’s history, including the Bible used during George Washington’s Presidential inauguration and the statue of Washington out front. Built in 1719, Fraunces Tavern Museum (54 Pearl St., 212-425-1778) consists of a colonial-style restaurant and a museum that exhibits Revolutionary Era armaments, flags, and other art and objects. The Museum of Jewish Heritage (36 Battery Place, 646-437-4200) depicts Jewish culture in the early 1900s and tells the story of the Holocaust from the perspective of those who experienced it. The National Museum of the American Indian (1 Bowling Green, 212-514-3700) is home to the world’s largest, most extensive collection of Native arts and artifacts.

Located directly across from the World Trade Center site (Church St. between Vesey & Liberty Sts.), St. Paul’s Chapel, an Episcopal church and Manhattan’s oldest public building in continuous use (1766), was home to the extraordinary eight-month volunteer relief effort after the terrorist attacks of September 11. The interactive Unwavering Spirit honors that ministry’s legacy of love and compassion.

The South Street Seaport district (Pier 17, Water & Fulton Sts., 212-732-7678) dates back to the 1600s and has grown into one of the city’s most vital commercial centers with a museum and many shops and restaurants. In the 1960s, the streets that run through the heart of it were closed and repaved with cobblestones, making it a unique place to eat, shop, stroll, and view riverfront activities.

While at the Seaport, be sure to check out the long-running, popular, BODIES (11 Fulton St., 888-9BODIES). In this much-talked-about attraction—where preserved whole-body specimens as well as organs and partial-body specimens are on display—visitors can see exactly “what lies beneath” and the complex systems involved in the activities that are a part of daily life.

Tours departing from lower Manhattan include Statue Cruises, Helicopter Flight Services, and Liberty Helicopter Tours.

A good way to take all of lower Manhattan in is with Uncle Sam’s New York’s Alexander Hamilton Financial District Tour. They’ll introduce you to some of the lesser-known sides of the neighborhood with inside looks at the Statue of Liberty, Goldman Sachs, Hanover Square, Delmonico’s Restaurant, Wall Street, the Stock Exchange, and the World Trade Center.
