  • New York City is the crossroads of the universe, and representative of the cultural diversity in the city is the many varieties of cuisine available to the visitor. From sizzling steaks to tandoori, the city’s restaurants offer the best food from all over the globe. Sampling these offerings is an experience in itself, and we recommend you spend some of your time in the city visiting these highly diverse, and excellent, restaurants.

A “transcendent” dining experience awaits at Nirvana, home to classic and creative Indian dishes served in a modern setting. In addition to excellent vindaloos, tandoori entrées, and slow-cooked vegetable items, recommended meals include the crab shish kebab and Nirvana rabbit fiesta. 346 Lexington Ave. at 40th St., 212-983-0000; nirvanany.com.

Relaxed sophistication and exceptional cuisine are the order of the day at The Capital Grille, where rich African mahogany paneling and warm lighting from one-of-a-kind Art Deco chandeliers set the tone for a comfortably elegant evening. The impressive menu features nationally renowned dry aged steaks and the freshest of seafood, as well as an award-winning wine list of more than 5,000 bottles. They have three locations in Manhattan, including near the Theatre District (120 W. 51st St., 212-246-0154), on Wall Street (120 Broadway, 212-374-1811), and in the Trylon Towers of the Chrysler Center (155 E. 42nd St., 212-953-2000). thecapitalgrille.com.

You haven’t tasted pizza until you’ve tried the coal-oven sensations at Angelo’s Pizza. They use the finest and freshest ingredients (served by the pie). Try either of their white pies (ricotta or mozzarella) for the purest presentation of their great flavors. New York Eats says, “it’s the best thing to happen to 57th St.; the pizza is very fine, indeed.” Attractive wood and brass furnishings add to the perfect meal, which is also a great budget-conscious choice. 1697 Broadway at 53rd St., 212-245-8811. Additional locations: 117 W. 57th St. btw. Sixth & Seventh Aves., 212-333-4333; 1043 Second Ave. at 55th St., 212-521-3600; angelospizzany.com.

Grand Central Oyster Bar is a landmark within a landmark. This living encyclopedia of seafood -- a Fort Knox of fish houses, if you will -- has been doing business for over 90 years deep in the bowels of the Grand Central Terminal. Its vault-like Gustavino glazed white tile ceiling, massive light trimmed columns, ship’s wheel lighting fixtures, expansive counter top eating area, wonderfully old fashioned 23-seat Oyster Bar and warm, woody saloon, complete with swinging doors, stuffed fish, portholes and nautical wall hangings, mark it as a place from another era. Grand Central Terminal, Lower Level (42nd St. btw. Lexington & Vanderbilt Aves.), 212-490-6650; oysterbarny.com.

Sexy and sophisticated, the pan-Latin restaurant Agua Dulce is the perfect place to grab a late-night meal, offering dinner on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights until 3am. They also host a daily happy hour from 3:30 to 6:30 and 11 until 3am. The first element that draws you into Agua Dulce is the outdoor seating, which is whimsical and airy with park-style benches. The tower bar, complete with ladder, is the second spectacle and no less unique or inviting. Menu highlights include organic salmon citrus ceviche, skirt steak, grilled chicken with saffron scented Valencia rice and chorizo, smoked tea braised short rib, and yellowfin tuna with minted lychee salsita. 802 Ninth Ave. btw. 53rd & 54th Sts., 212-262-1299; aguadulceny.com.

Bill’s Gay Nineties offers a restaurant experience from another era -- it originally opened as a speakeasy during Prohibition in a brownstone built during the 1860s. The decor features stained glass, chandeliers, turn-of-the-20th-century theatre posters, playbills, and portraits of prizefighters and racehorses. The menu offers hearty fare, including seafood and excellent steaks. 57 E. 54th St. btw. Madison & Park Aves., 212-355-0243; billsnyc.com.

With its lovingly restored turn-of-the-20th-century architecture, Brendan’s Bar & Grill is a slice of old New York. Brendan’s offers top-of-the-line bar and grill delights that range from comfort foods and steaks to seafood dishes and pizzas; all are first-rate and served in generous portions. Brendan’s also has special party menus of buffet hors d’oeuvres that will make any occasion festive. 42 W. 35th St., 212-564-5405; brendansbar.com.

The East Village’s Buenos Aires is an authentic Argentinean restaurant where there are candles on the tables, a tent out back, and TVs that offer non-stop soccer overhead. They serve hefty portions of hearty South American specialties like empanadas, savory sausages, grilled steaks, along with Argentinean wines, and desserts. Main courses tend, as they do in Argentina, toward husky, broad-shouldered meat dishes. Try the surprisingly tender 16-ounce skirt steak, the velvety soft, perfectly cooked medium-rare mountain-like filet mignon, or the grilled short ribs. There’s no pretense at this comfortable neighborhood nook, but gourmets and gourmands love digging into their large portions of high-quality, unusual food at modest prices. 513 E. 6th St. btw. Aves. A & B, 212-228-2775; buenosairesnyc.com.

Villa Mosconi is celebrating more than 30 years of satisfying hungry patrons. A restaurant that withstands the test of time for over three decades, especially in a restaurant hot spot like Greenwich Village, has to have a lot going for it, and Villa Mosconi does. Their three dining rooms (including a Four Season Garden) offer the perfect setting for celebrating any occasion, whether it’s a couple’s romantic evening out on the town, a family gathering, business dinner, birthday, or anniversary. Popular entrées include veal Bolognese and swordfish, but they can whip up just about anything -- even if it’s not on the menu. 69 MacDougal St. btw. Bleecker & Houston Sts., 212-673-0390; villamosconi.com.

If you’ve got an exotic, adventurous palate, head straight to Utsav Festive India, an upscale favorite serving dishes and spices from each part of that country. The chef can cook to any liking, and with both a prix-fixe Broadway dinner and à la carte specials, it’s a favorite of native Indians and Manhattanites alike. The best part of the prix-fixe is that it comes with mint and tamarind sauces, vegetable of the day, kali dal lentils, rice, and nan. 1185 Sixth Ave., enter at 46th St. btw. Sixth & Seventh Aves., 212-575-2525; utsavny.com.

Suzie’s has been a serving up a wide selection of Oriental favorites for nearly 40 years, offering a variety of health-conscious dishes. And it’s perfect for special occasions -- and they will help ensure it is a memorable one. 163 Bleecker St. btw. Thompson & Sullivan Sts.), 212-777-1395, 212-777-1439; suziesrestaurant.com.
