Star power, for instance, is particularly intense at New York City Center, where Patti LuPone is bedazzling audiences as Mama Rose in the Encores! SUMMER STARS series’ production of Gypsy. More good news: LuPone (center), last seen on Broadway when she picked up a Tony nomination co-starring alongside Michael Cerveris in the groundbreaking 2005-2006 production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, happens to be sharing the Gypsy stage with a couple other powerhouse Broadway performers: three-time Tony winner Boyd Gaines (fresh from his critically performance in last season’s Journey’s End), and the always-radiant Laura Benanti, whose Broadway credits include The Sound of Music, Nine, and The Wedding Singer. Better act fast, though: Gypsy is only scheduled through July 29. And should you be unfamiliar with New York’s premier parody of theatre in the Big Apple, this production is a must-must-see since it recaps many of the show’s classic hits from its impressive 25-year history, as well as offering parodies of currently running shows like Broadway blockbusters Spamalot, Spring Awakening and Mary Poppins. Once addicted the naughty pleasures of Forbidden Broadway, you’ll no doubt crave more. Fortunately, a new edition will be arriving at some point this fall. Click here for tickets.Anyone who shares my deep fascination with surrealism and Theatre of the Absurd should make it a point to see Second Stage’s breathtaking production of playwright Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, extended through Aug 12. Ruhl’s unique take on the Greek myth about the musician Orpheus, who descends into the Underworld to find his beloved wife Eurydice and return her to Earth, is verbally stunning, as when Orpheus tells her to “Remember my melody,” and Eurydice replies, “It will be imprinted on my heart like glass.” The visuals are equally compelling thanks to Les Waters’ direction and Scott Bradley’s set design, which captures the essence of a lightly tattered spa in which water is called upon to refresh, purify, and cause forgetfulness.
